The Qur’an teaches us how to think, not what to think

It is impressive for one to see that a book 1500 old, is approaching the truth with a revolutionary method and is arguing for wisdom. In this article we see that the Qur’an is approaching the reader with reasonable questions in order to make him aware of the truth on his own.

It is very reasonable for some to believe in error, that the Qur’an is a book strictly dogmatic in its positions. Such and other worst ideas, propagated by the opponents of Islam without any evidence or evidence from the Holy Qur’an itself. In the Qur’an of course is stressed the belief, the theological positions, the words of God, the rules. But all these are not dry without arguments.

The Qur’an as we said above, is approaching those that it considers as truths with questions. Questions raised by the Almighty which sometimes He answers Himself or at other times He lets man give the answers. The purpose is clear. Through this democratic method, man understands how to study or to explore the truth objectively, thus reaching it without logical errors. This method not only could not be characterized as doctrinal, in contrast the man learns how to think rather than what to think.

Let’s look at a few examples of this methology and these questions:

“Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?” Al Qur’an 2:44

The question is response to hypocrisy. It makes references to those who call for justice and piety but forget to apply them themselves. It stresses a group of people “who study the scriptures.” For those the hypocrisy is worse as they read for justice first hand. They preach it but do not act it in their own lives.

In our own society we can give thousand of examples.

The important thing in this piece is that the Qur’an sets this question, although it has taught us the law. This question makes the reader understand by himself not to be a hypocrite.

The Qur’an says asking again:

“Then did you think that we created you uselessly and that to us you would not be returned?” Al Qur’an 23:115

In a simple question here the Qur’an “answers” the deniers of the afterlife and atheists. If there is no afterlife then everything we live here is futile without real meaning. Our existence itself is meaningless. Only with the existence of God and the existence of the afterlife, there is meaning in our struggles, worries, joys, etc Otherwise we are here without purpose, without substance. What is the point of morality, love, values, justice, democracy, equality,  and all that? And how the unjust will answer for their injustices and how will the righteous be rewarded?

The issue of course rouses much debate, but it should be noted that the Qur’an by putting a question, leads the reader to the logical conclusion, that there is no possibility not to be an Omnipotent Almighty, who runs the Universe and simply created us for this short life alone.

A similar question is also where the Qur’an says:

“Indeed, Allah is the cleaver of grain and date seeds. He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allah ; so how are you deluded?” Al Qur’an 6:95

This question is addressed to the pagans and idolaters . How can they worship something that has no power to do anything? How can they worship something that their own hands made?

Here we have once again the question that leads to a logical answer.

The Qur’an also says:

“He created man from a sperm-drop; then at once, he is a clear adversary.” Al Quran 16:4

The Qur’an here refers to the “competitor” and ” rival”. The competitor, is the one who with arrogance and pride tries to look like God. Well the place is full of them. Just take a look around you. To those people who think that due to their power they have everything ,God made a reference to the  material from which  they emanated. Semen! Seeds  they were like all of us from a humble substance and now they are standing as deniers of God through their acts and beliefs. The reference to the semen stresess that he  (the man) was weak and nearly non existent . And now he thinks he has it all.

The Qur’ran has thousands of such questions on any topic of concern to humans. Questions that God does not answer but leaves the man to answer to understand himself the truth. Such a methodology, one can find only in the Qur’an. The Qur’an is the only theological book that approaches the truth and argues on the basis of its  own readers. Is this not  a sign that we are dealing with a book of non-human?I

This is something which the disblievers would themselves acknowlege in Aakhirah. They would recall with remorse their lack of seriousness about thinking which had led them to the Fire.Allaah The Exalted narrates the dialogue between them and wardens of Jahannam(Hell).
Aayah 10 of Sooratul Mulk is very significant concerning the admission of disbelievers about their lack of listening and thinking in their previous life of Dunyaa when warners used to warn them.

Nafs(Carnal self within a human being) is the greatest enemy of a Muslim believer which is Ammârah which commands, enjoins, incites man to sin against Allâh.
In Aayah 53 of Soorah Yoosuf-Yoosuf ‘alaihis salâm who was a Nabi who was tried by a woman to seduce or tempt but Allâh protected Him through His Rahmah(Mercy), it is mentioned:
“Nor do I absolve my own self (of blame): the (human) Nafs(self) is certainly Ammârah(commands evil,is prone to evil), unless my Rabb(Lord,Sustainer) do bestow His Mercy: but surely my Lord is Oft- forgiving, Most Merciful.”
      http://www.englishkuran.com/12-yusuf-joseph/

When man feels guilty for his or her sins and reproaches or censures himself or herself within himself or herself, Nafs(Self) elevates to Nafs-ul-Lawwâmah(Self-reproaching Self) praised and honoured by Allâh in Aayah 2 of Soorah Al-Qiyâmah by swearing by Nafs-ul-Lawwâmah.
There may be subtle errors in the translation by Muhammad Asad but I liked his description of Nafs-ul-Lawwâmah as:”the accusing voice of man’s own conscience!,”the [self-]reproaching soul”: i.e., man’s subconscious awareness of his own shortcomings and failings” can help Muslims in understanding Nafs-ul-Lawwâmah.
      http://www.englishkuran.com/75-al-qiyama-the-rising-of-the-dead-resurrection/

The self of the highest spiritual stature is Nafs-ul-Mutmainnah which loves and feels awe of Allâh the most.It would be welcomed into Jannah by Allâh Himself. In Soorah Al-Fajr,Allâh says:
      27. (To the righteous soul will be said:) “O Nafs-ul-Mutmainnah(O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!)”
      28. “Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!
      29. “Enter thou, then, among My devotees!
      30. “Yea, enter thou My Heaven!
      http://www.englishkuran.com/89-al-fajr-the-dawn-daybreak/
What we should keep in mind that this feeling of heart or soul or self is similar to what Allâh describes in Aayah 28 of Soorah Ar-Ra’d:
“Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah. for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah(Dhikr of Allâh) do hearts find satisfaction or peace(Itmi’nân)”
      http://www.englishkuran.com/13-ar-rad-the-thunder/
The peace, tranquility, contentment, bliss, rest, satisfaction referred to here is in Arabic “Tatmainn-ul-Quloob” where Quloob stands for hearts.

May Allâh protect us from the dangers of the Nafs-ul-Ammârah.
May Allâh make our selves or souls Nafs-ul-Mutmainnah and bestow upon our hearts this Itmi’nân الاطمئنان of hearts described in Soorah Ar-Ra’d and Soorah Al-Fajr.
May Allâh unite us all in Jannah with Allâh’s Rasool sall Allâhu ‘alaihi wasallam and His Companions(As-hâb) radiyAllâhu ‘anhum.

Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an:

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way. (Surat al-Baqara, 2:186)

    He (swt) also says:

Say: Call upon Allah or call upon, the Beneficent Allah; whichever you call upon, He has the best names; and do not utter your prayer with a very raised voice nor be silent with regard to it, and seek a way between these. (Surat al-Isra, 17:110)

    And
“Call your Lord humbly and secretly. He does not love those who transgress the boundaries.” (Sura al-Araf: 55)

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The dua of a Muslim for his brothers in his absence is readily accepted, an angel is appointed to his side, whenever he makes a beneficial dua for his brother, the angel says, ‘Ameen’, and May you be blessed with the same”. (Sahih Muslim).

Inshallah I will make dua for you and for all our brothers and sisters. May Allah (swt) grant you and them all that is good in this life and grant you and them all that is good in the Hereafter.

    Ameen

  6. Muhammad Elijah says:

    Assalâmu ‘Alaikum waRahmatu(A)llâhi waBarakâtuh

I recollect my teacher of local language telling us about this great Aayah(Sign) of Allâh when I was a student at school.I had felt very deep Qurb(closeness and nearness to Allâh) that day.It is the same Qurb we feel in all Sunnah A’mâl(Actions):Salâh(which includes Qiyâm-ul-Lail(Standing in worship at night in Salâh reciting in ‘Arabi the memorized Qur’ân),Tahajjud,Tarâweeh),Sawm(which includes ‘Aashoora,Ayyâm-ul-Abyad(The bright days:13,14,15 of the lunar Hijri months when the beautiful full moon is the most bright) ,Fasting on mondays and thursdays),Sadaqah(Charity which essentially includes the obligatory annual Islamic charity Zakâh),Hajj,Dhikr(which includes Tilâwah) and especially Du’â(by Raising hands in supplication and invocation).Qurb grows and grows with more and more A’mâl(Actions),more and more Hasanât(virtues which are written down by Malâikah(Angels).
May Allâh cause us all to grow in His nearness, closeness and qurb everyday.
Those moments in Dunyâ(life of this temporary, evanescent world) which pass without Dhikr(Remembrance of Allâh by tongue and heart by Asmâ-ul-Husna or Tasbeeh for example) are something we would miss in Jannah,May Allâh admit us into it.

  8. Dear Sister,

Mashaallah, you keep posting wonderful thoughts.

Here are some reflections from a Greek-American reader on my book, Deserts and Mountains. You might find it to be interesting. Please let me know if you would be interested to read the book to provide some feedback.
“As a Turkish writer, you have positively embraced the Greek culture. Personally, I found the section describing Ali and Nour’s ascent to the Acropolis, not so much challenging on a literal level, but impressive on a figurative level……”
